Mitsubishi to Mass-Produce Humanoid Robots at Former Engine Plant

TOKYO Mitsubishi Motors plans to begin mass-producing artificial intelligence-powered humanoid robots at one of its Japanese manufacturing plants in the first half of 2027, marking one of the industry's most significant moves toward large-scale robot production and physical AI. The automaker announced it will manufacture humanoid robots developed by Tokyo-based startup Highlanders Inc. using an unused engine production line at its Kyoto plant.
The facility is expected to produce up to 1,000 robots per month. According to Mitsubishi, the robots will initially be deployed at the company's own manufacturing facilities to help address anticipated labor shortages before potentially being offered for sale to other manufacturers. Standing approximately 1.75 meters tall, the humanoid robot is equipped with artificial intelligence that enables it to assess its surroundings autonomously.
The robot features articulated hands capable of grasping and carrying objects, allowing it to perform tasks that traditionally require human dexterity. The production strategy reflects a broader shift within the automotive industry as manufacturers explore humanoid robots for factory operations. Toyota has begun trial deployments of robots at a Canadian plant and BMW has introduced humanoid robots into production.
Mitsubishi said it will leverage the manufacturing expertise and quality systems developed through decades of vehicle production to support robot manufacturing.
