Infineon Technologies is supplying silicon carbide ( SiC ) power devices to Eaton for its latest medium-voltage solid-state transformer platform, targeting 800V DC power architectures for AI data centers. The companies say the collaboration will help improve the efficiency and reliability of power conversion between high-density computing infrastructure and the electricity grid.
For eeNews Europe readers, the deal highlights how SiC devices are moving deeper into data center power infrastructure as AI workloads push power demand higher. It also points to growing industry momentum behind 800V DC distribution and solid-state transformers as alternatives to conventional multi-stage power conversion.
SiC targets higher efficiency
Eaton plans to use Infineon's SiC devices in its MVSST 2.0 medium-voltage solid-state transformer platform, which is intended initially for deployment across the Asia-Pacific region.
The platform is designed to reduce the number of power conversion stages compared with conventional architectures. Eaton says this can improve efficiency, power density and deployment flexibility, all increasingly important as operators build larger AI clusters with higher rack-level power requirements.
“As energy demand from AI data centers and industrial applications continues to grow, the demand for efficient, reliable and sustainable power conversion is increasing,” said Andreas Weisl, Executive Vice President and Chief Sales Officer of Industrial & Infrastructure at Infineon. “By joining forces with Eaton, we aim to advance solid-state transformer technology and contribute to the development of a more scalable, efficient and sustainable infrastructure for powering the AI data centers of the future.”
Eaton's MVSST 2.0 is also one of the first medium-voltage solid-state transformer platforms to achieve IEC certification, according to the companies.
Moving toward higher-voltage SSTs
The partnership comes as data center operators explore medium-voltage DC distribution and 800V DC architectures to handle rising AI power demand while cutting conversion losses and infrastructure complexity.
“Against the backdrop of rapidly increasing requirements for power efficiency, system reliability and scalability in AI data centers, our goal is to advance the development and adoption of SST technology. Thus, we aim to create greater value for data center and power grid operators as well as the renewable energy sector,” said David Zheng, Vice President of R&D for Power Quality in APAC at Eaton. “Infineon's advanced SiC technology is helping us accelerate the deployment of these next-generation power architectures.”
Infineon and Eaton are already looking beyond the current platform. The companies are exploring future solid-state transformer designs using 2.3kV and 3.3kV SiC power modules, aimed at supporting higher system voltages, improved efficiency and reliability in AI data centers, grid modernization and renewable energy applications.
