According to foreign media reports, the latest data from Statistics Canada shows that in June, the penetration rate of zero-emission vehicles (ZEVs) in Canada returned to double digits, with growth outpacing the broader market; total industry-wide vehicle sales in Canada rose 7.3% year-on-year for the month.

In June, sales of battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) in Canada surged to 21,876 units, a significant increase of 56.1% compared to the same period in 2024. Notably, the Canadian federal government did not offer purchase subsidies for ZEVs in June 2024.

Total vehicle sales across all models in Canada reached 190,167 units in June, ending an eight-month streak of year-on-year declines.

The ZEV penetration rate in Canada rose to 11.5% in June, compared to just 7.9% in the same month last year. In terms of sales volume, this marks the best month for ZEVs in Canada since December 2024. It is reported that in December 2024, the combined sales of BEVs and PHEVs in Canada reached 24,787 units.

The Canadian federal government's previous vehicle purchase subsidy program expired in January 2025, which had suppressed the adoption of ZEVs for over a year. In February this year, the federal government restarted the subsidies: up to CAD 5,000 for BEVs and up to CAD 2,500 for PHEVs.
