Metal Injection Molding: An Overview of Process and Applications

Metal Injection Molding (MIM) mixes fine metal powders with a polymer binder, injects the feedstock into a mold, then removes the binder and sinters the part to near-full density.

Typical relative density reaches 98% or higher, with dimensional tolerances of ±0.3–0.5% and as-sintered surface roughness down to Ra 1.0 µm.

MIM is most competitive for complex-shaped, small, thin-walled parts in monthly volumes above 20,000 pieces — applications range from foldable phone hinges and watch cases to automotive gears and medical accessories.
